Routine Eye Examination Recommendations for All Ages

Having regular eye exams helps you achieve the best vision possible and keeps your eyes healthy by checking for diseases and conditions that may or may not present symptoms. Your appointment will include time for a personal medical history and any specialized tests if needed. You eyes may be dilated, which allows our doctors to carefully examine your retina.

Pediatric Eye Care

Good vision is essential for children to properly develop and learn. Early detection of vision problems or eye disease provides the best option for treatment and outcomes. Dr. Rutar is currently the only fellowship-trained pediatric and strabismus specialist in Southern Oregon, specializing in conditions that include strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), and cataracts in adults and children.

In the first three years, infants should have their vision checked as part of regular pediatric checkups. Between ages three and six, an eye exam every year or two is recommended. Throughout childhood and the teenage years, exams should be scheduled every two years. Click here to learn more about scheduling your child’s appointment.

When Do You Need An Eye Exam?

People between the ages of 20 and 39 usually only need eye examinations if a noticeable change in vision occurs. However, people in this age group who wear corrective lenses should schedule an annual exam.

Beginning at age 40, regular eye exams should be scheduled at least every two years or annually if using corrective lenses.

Starting at 65, yearly exams are recommended to rule out glaucoma, cataracts or other age-related eye diseases.

Our physicians provide exams and treatments, using current technology and scientific information, so you can sustain healthy vision.

Some of the eye diseases and eye disorders we treat include the following:

  • Cataracts: a cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which is located behind the iris and the pupil.
  • Diabetes (Type 1 and 2)
  • Floaters: these are a common occurrence and can degenerate your vision.
  • Glaucoma: a disease of the optic nerve which is the nerve carrying images we view to the brain.
  • Strabismus, Misaligned Eyes: more commonly known as cross-eyed or wall-eyed, is a vision condition in which a person can not align both eyes simultaneously under normal conditions.

Many eye diseases and problems have no early warning symptoms. Routine exams enable us to detect and treat vision problems and are the best safeguard for maintaining good vision. I can't rave enough about the amazing Dr. Rutar. I deeply respect and admire her skill and knowledge. I had strabismus (eye muscle) surgery done by Dr. Rutar February 2018. I'm 32 and my left eye has been "lazy" my whole life, due to an underdeveloped muscle. More than a year later, my eyes are still aligned. The incisions healed beautifully and my depth perception is spot on. You'd never know what my eyes have been though and I'll be scheduling an appointment for contacts soon.
